A friend sent me a thought provoking article entitled “People are Still the Best Computers”. In these days where, if it moves the tendency is to attempt to automate it the piece acts as a healthy corrective to those who believe that computers are, in all circumstances the way forward as regards solving problems. In brief the post argues that we eroneously try to automate the complex instead of the simple repetitive tasks and that this has detramental consequences for us all.
I can well remember attempting to purchase train tickets, using Virgin Train’s automated telephony system. I got half way through the ordering process (several times) only to be cut off. In the end, instead of attempting to navigate around the maze-like complexities of the automated system I remained silent and, after a while I was transfered to a real human being who helped me to purchase my tickets, oh blessed relief!
