NEW MOBILE PHONE APP LETS THE BLIND SEE

As someone who is registered blind and who is unable to read print, I was interested to read about Viz Wiz, a mobile phone app which allows a blind person to snap an image of an object, send it with a sound clip and then receive a description of the object in question. The app is, I believe experimental at present but the visually impaired volunteers said that they would be prepared to pay for the app.

The app sounds promising especially to blind people who live alone. The idea is not wholly new. Blind mobile phone users have, for some time been snapping photographs of objects and sending them to sighted friends to have them interpreted. The difference now is that this is being turned into a commercial venture with the potential to enhance the independence of blind people.
