Ray Kurzweil famously postulated the idea of the Singularity, that by about 2045 machine intelligence will surpass that of humans. After this point, Kurzweil contends the future is highly unpredictable. The October 12th issue of Technology Review contains an interesting piece co-authored by the co-founder of Microsoft which argues that the Singularity remains a long way off. Indeed the article contends that at the end of the 21st century people will still be debating when the Singularity will arrive. The authors do not contend that the Singularity can never come to pass, merely that individuals such as Kurzweil are grossly optimistic in their view as to when the event will come to pass.
