Birds Singing

As I walked home this evening the song of many birds reached my ears. The relative absence of traffic magnified their singing and the spring evening seemed filled with birdsong. The music was so lovely that a part of me wished to stop listening, to block my ears against such profoundly painful and beautiful singing.
On the logical level this evening chorus had no purpose other than for the birds to stake out their territory and obtain a mate. Birds sing because that is what they are programmed by nature to do. However we as humans respond to nature and find in it a means of expressing our emotions. That is perhaps as inevitable a fact as birds singing because that is what nature has conditioned them to do.
The birds are quiet now and yet their singing is with me still.
